Brigitte Puschmann’s works are about presence – about the moment in which color, form and space suddenly become visible, tangible and immediately present. Her works do not appear as self-contained pictorial orders, but as dynamic systems that constantly reorganize themselves through perception, movement and spatial experience. This is precisely where the uniqueness of her work lies: while many contemporary positions primarily emphasize process or concept, Puschmann creates an immediate visual intensity that physically activates the space. Starting from modular and serial structures, she develops pictorial spaces based on repetition, variation and controlled displacement. Color fields, linear elements, transparencies and rhythmic sequences create complex visual states in which order and irritation are simultaneously effective.

here. the art of presence
Perception is not static, but unfolds depending on light, perspective and the position of the viewer. Her artistic practice moves between painting, object and installation. Puschmann sees series such as Stripes or Infinity as open systems that can be expanded, rearranged and read differently time and again. The individual work remains less an autonomous object than part of a larger relationship between color, space, movement and presence. In terms of art history, her work moves between color theory, abstract painting and installation-based spatial art. Influences from Josef Albers, Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Gerhard Richter are just as noticeable as questions about perception, materiality and complex reality. The focus is not on transformation as a mere process, but on its result: the moment in which visual order is overturned and something appears with full presence.

Nothing is simply there.
Presence instead of assertion. Brigitte Puschmann’s works are not about narrative in the classical sense. They do not illustrate a world outside themselves and do not formulate any clear messages. Their real theme is presence – that rare moment in which a picture is not only viewed, but suddenly appears physically and atmospherically in space. In Puschmann’s work, color, form and movement condense into an immediate presence that can be experienced rather than explained. This is precisely where the independence of her position within contemporary abstract painting lies. Her works are by no means created by chance or purely intuitively, but follow clear conceptual questions that run through her entire oeuvre. Themes such as perception, transformation, timelessness, spatial instability or the relationship between order and irritation form the structural core of her work. Series such as Next Level, Infinity or Wallpaper therefore do not function as loose sequences of images, but as open systems of artistic research in which color, form and space are constantly re-examined. What is decisive, however, is that this conceptual level never stands theoretically above painting. Puschmann does not develop abstract models that are subsequently illustrated, but translates her questions directly into visual experience. As a result, her works do not appear to be closed statements, but rather open states. They only fully unfold in the interplay of light, movement and perception. The image never remains static; it changes with the position of the viewer and with the duration of the viewing itself. Presence here is therefore not a decorative effect, but an active state between work, space, perception and body.

You don't become an artist. You are.
Although her works often appear highly structured, they are not the result of rational planning alone. “You don’t become an artist. You are,” says Brigitte Puschmann – a sentence that aptly describes her working process. Her paintings develop from intuition, experience and an open dialog with material and color. Decisions are made directly during the painting process; new color spaces, unexpected overlays or material reactions can fundamentally change an originally conceived pictorial idea. It is precisely this openness to the unpredictable that distinguishes her works from purely constructive approaches. The underlying systems remain permeable and develop their own dynamic. Transparent acrylic layers create atmospheric depths in which light continues to work within the surface. The particular intensity of her works does not arise from expressivity or gesture, but from concentration, rhythm and precision. This creates pictorial spaces of quiet complexity that appear both controlled and lively at the same time.

Brigitte Puschmann (*1969 in Munich) lives and works between Germany and Austria. In her artistic practice, she explores the interactions of color, form, space and perception. Her works move between painting, object and installation and deal with transformation, presence and the changeability of visual orders. Characteristic of her work are serial and modular work groups that are understood as open systems and are constantly being opened up anew through movement, light and changes in perspective.
She completed her artistic training at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts Salzburg and at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Kolbermoor in the class of Prof. Markus Lüpertz, where she obtained her diploma in drawing and painting and is now a master student. Since 2024, she has devoted herself exclusively to her artistic work.
Puschmann’s works have been presented in exhibitions, art associations and at international art fairs in Germany, Austria and Italy. Recent exhibition venues include Vienna, Milan, Karlsruhe, Munich and Weimar. Her works can be found in the collection of the Copelouzos Family Art Museum in Athens, among others. She is a member of various artists’ associations and professional organizations in German-speaking countries.
