Marika Thom’s paintings are explosions on canvas.
Not only in terms of the colors, but also in terms of the formal approach.
You can really feel the inner power that “takes flight” during the artist’s working process.
Her art is so immediate, direct and full of energy that you wonder where the young painter gets it from.
Willem de Koning once tried to explain it for himself: “The texture of the will comes before everything else. “* Marika Thoms is about precisely this “will”; it is about her irrepressible desire to communicate.
It is the discharge of her inner mind-set that postulates itself as pure, expressive aesthetics on the canvas.

Nevertheless, Marika Thoms develops her very own expression and various, clearly defined color harmonies for entire series of paintings.
Despite the pictorial spontaneity that catches the viewer’s eye, the creation of her works is not a single spontaneous emotional process, but rather the sum of several actions and reflections.
“Nothing falls into my lap.
Painting is hard work and a unique mixture of perpetual reflection and reverie,” says Marika, describing her approach.
This in-depth reflection even goes so far that the artist checks her paintings in the mirror – to see whether the harmony of the composition is also present in the mirror, despite all the “explosions” depicted.
This creates unadulterated truth in the picture.
You can sense this in her works, which is what makes them so appealing.

it's about the power within me; it creates attraction
And yet – or precisely because of this – we dare to do so.
There are several reasons for this.
First and foremost, it is the technique and working method that connects the two.
Schüttbilder and the intentional power of their works.
And what is not immediately apparent is that there are indeed parallels between their lives.
Of course, due to Marika Thoms’ young age, no direct comparisons can be drawn with the life-experienced, deeply provocative Hermann Nitsch, who died in 2022.
But the straightforwardness and consistency of her life decisions, which often border on stubbornness, is the same.
It is this consistency of devoting herself fully to creativity and seeing life for art as a single passion.
Of course, Marika Thoms is different from Nitsch – she is first and foremost a woman and her art is definitely feminine in character.
She is also a product of her time and her environment.
Born and raised in the turbulent post-reunification period in Gardelegen (Saxony-Anhalt), she quickly developed a feeling for truth.
Truth and justice.
Two values that take on a very Western form in the new turbo-capitalism flooding the East.
Her way out is art.
Together with an artist friend, she opens a gallery in Magdeburg.
She gives creative people from the underground scene a platform and paints with wild determination herself.
She develops her style and expresses her inner protest piece by piece by hurling abstract, wild, wiped, scratched, sprayed, poured, true, beautiful, colorful art at the world.
Her concept of the struggle for truth and justice – and the actual aesthetics of the world.
“I’m in my studio every day. It’s the place where I’m completely with myself.”

Her paintings are wooosh, rumms, hiss or clap or like the light flutter of a wing beat, all full of surprise and as surprising as her life.
Always 100 percent artist.
Using acrylics, pigments, pastels, charcoal and other painting utensils, she creates works of art on cotton fabric with her very own language of color and form.
Marika Thoms’ works of art are explosive mixtures of color that impress with their intentional power.
Full of consistency and straightforwardness, the artist lives out her creativity in the studio – and goes her own way.
