Josepha is ablaze—not in the pathos of tragedy, but in the blazing twilight of a young woman fighting against extinction. The image shows her fragmented, dissolved into lines, smoke, and colors that spread across her body like pockets of embers. Her head tilted back, her face contorted between heat and a sense of new beginnings—a living beacon of inner movement.

Here, Higgs recounts an intimate moment in the grand myth of Oberschweinbach in August: Joseph’s story is not an epic tale of heroism, but a tender chapter about backlash and withdrawal, about the aftershocks of a breakup that ended “on good terms”—yet still left something behind that continues to have an effect.

Something still burns inside her—not revenge, not anger, but simply the desire to feel again. She dances at the village festival, smells the scent of the past, the body she thought she knew—and suddenly something flares up that she thought she had long since brought under control.

The picture shows Josepha in the moment just before she speaks. Just before she asks. Just before the second scene begins.

It isn’t burning because it was destroyed.
Rather, it’s because there are still embers inside it,
that won’t go out on their own.
