In The Two Graces and an Ovulation, Mongi Higgs deconstructs the ancient myth of the Graces – those idealized embodiments of female beauty and grace – in a radical and contemporary way. Instead of heavenly lightness, the two figures in the upper part of the picture appear raw, chaotic and agitated. Their bodies consist of tangled lines, glowing red-orange as if under tension. Not a classic pose, not a clear gaze – but a state.
The “Graces” here are not muses, but people. They represent women as they really are: vulnerable, strong, contradictory, not born to represent, but to experience. Their grace lies not in being beautiful, but in being.
The lower part of the picture shows the opposite of myth painting: a digital grid of pixels in strong colors that appear like an abstract representation of an ovulation – mechanized, de-emotionalized, almost clinical. And for this very reason, universal.
The contrast between expressive body drawing and controlled pixel structure emphasizes the tension between ancient projection and modern reality: femininity is not a myth – it is lived biology, shared experience, daily complexity.
