The location could not be more fitting for a rendezvous: a romantic castle in the middle of the south of France. The enchanting Château de Villarlong is located in the Occitanie region. A special happening takes place here behind medieval castle walls: a symbiosis of old and new. Every apartment, every single suite is decorated with inspiring, modern art. The residents of the French country house-style Apartment Lagarde meet the work of the Munich artist Bettina Zapp.
The abstract pictures are snapshots of dialogs interwoven in space – and form a fascinating counterpoint to the castle atmosphere.

The special atmosphere is reflected in every detail of the 64-hectare estate and park. Exciting views from inside and fascinating views of the surrounding vineyards, not just from the infinity pool. The German-American owners Sandra and Jörg Pohlman live out their passion for art to the full at this location. The power couple from Munich occupy the entire house. They deliberately chose Bettina Zapp, an artist from Galerie Konsum 163: “Bettina’s expressive paintings particularly appealed to us. Her works form a wonderful contrast to the French country house style. We are delighted that Bettina’s works are now part of our collection.” Jörg Pohlman, co-owner of a family business – together with his family, he has owned and operated Château de Villarlong since 2021.

Painting in the classical sense? No, Bettina Zapp’s abstract art consists more of pure form, structure, rhythm and color. She tears, picks apart and sprinkles her painted content into fragments and distributes them across the canvas in a pointed manner and with razor-sharp lines. “Painting needs to be carefully considered.” The artist is always concerned with the whole, broad spectrum of feelings. “I’m an emotional jet fighter,” says Bettina about herself. And we add: ” … and at the same time a subtle hummingbird.”

The art-loving owners have also deliberately placed Bettina Zapp’s works in other places in the château – so that the magnificent work can be seen by all guests. Sandra, a successful Munich patent attorney, took the redesign of the château into her own hands after the purchase. With great success. “The response from our guests has been great,” says the family happily.

If you now feel like enjoying the enchanting castle and the inspiring art of Bettina Zapp on site: Château de Villarlong is located around 110 kilometers from the nearest airport in Toulouse. Both wings of the château have been converted into spacious and extravagant apartments with open fireplaces and private courtyards for two, four or six people. The park with centuries-old trees, olive groves, vineyards, babbling fountains, orchards and the “garrigues”, a type of maquis so typical of the region, invite you to explore. Wine lovers will get their money’s worth in the entire region. Villarlong Castle is located directly in the Minervois wine-growing region. The beaches of the Mediterranean are just over an hour away.
