FUNdaMENTAL DOGmatic froEhlICH

Saarbrücken in the middle of February, a quiet residential suburb in a slightly hilly location, sunshine.
Ten o’clock, ten degrees.
Sunday idyll is in the air, even though it’s Tuesday.
Good mood déjà vu’s run through my head.
It’s soothing.
A blonde woman is standing on the right-hand side of the ascending street; she smiles, waves and is already waiting for us.
The single-storey store from the 1980s behind her has a large, floor-to-ceiling window on which “Atelier” and an Instagram code are written in blue letters.
The back of a sofa that would fit into any Ottfried Preussler book shimmers through the pane.
On the interior wall behind the sofa, colors rage on a canvas.
It’s all part of the program.
We are meeting Christiane Lohrig for the first time in person and in her studio.
And as is so often the case, it is the signs that confirm the later assessment.
And that is the case here, isn’t it?
The artist’s oeuvre speaks for itself.
Her works are pure good humor.
As simple and superficial as that sounds, there is a fundamental concept behind this good mood painting.
Not just in the sense of the pun FUNdaMENTAL, but in its real form.

In her work, the artist Christiane Lohrig manifests the dogmatic claim to the inner happiness, inner contentment and cheerfulness of every human being.
This does not mean that Christiane Lohrig goes through the world with a permanent smile, but art can change everything for the better.
“Even if you’re in a bad mood, the painting process creates energetic images,” says the artist.
Christiane Lohrig undertakes energetic journeys on her canvases.
Loud and quiet, cheeky or reserved, ironic and contemplative.
The artist masters the entire palette of emotions in a unique, signal-like abbreviation.
Almost as in comic strips, she relies on quickly graspable, reduced elements; this is particularly true of her figurative works, which is why her oeuvre is so wonderfully timeless.
The viewer is enraptured, amused – never remains untouched.

happy, DUfte

In addition to the artist’s cheerful, gestural painting style, there is one component that essentially characterizes her artistic cosmos.
These are the protagonists and recurring elements in the pictures.
First and foremost, Lola, the artist’s alter ego, the personified everyday avatar who encounters the beautiful simple things in life, followed by the hybrid creatures of dog, rabbit, pig, newt, amphibian or crocodile that exist all over the world.
Even recurring clouds or flowers are so full of personality that you think you know them by name.
Christiane Lohrig has a feel for how the real world should work.
This world radiates basic trust.
When you read the titles of the works and analyze the story behind most of the pictures, you feel and enjoy the lightness of being.
“Lalala blablabla” is how the artist self-deprecatingly describes the content of her works.
Wonderful – her success proves her right.

Christiane Lohrig’s creative process is intuitive; color always comes first.
“I have a feeling for color and the pictures emerge depending on my mood. Some paintings don’t have a concrete form or figure, but consist of color plays and elements that I arrange intuitively. I also take inspiration from my surroundings, from old buildings, walls or half-visible lettering.”
Christiane Lohrig’s works are mostly cheerful and show no signs of sadness or melancholy.
“That doesn’t mean I’m always cheerful.
But I refuse to let negativity drag me down.
Even when there is bad news, I try to turn it into something positive,” explains the artist.
We find the works present “The sunny side of life”.
